COLLAB MIXTAPE WITH EL CAPITAN [JORGE GONZALEZ]

DOWNLOAD

SO EXCITED TO FINALLY HAVE THIS TAPE UP!

EL CAPITAN, THE ORIGINAL HUARACHE-STER, AND SOON TO BE SLO GRADUATE, OFT DJS FOR KCPR 91.3FM, THE LOCAL LEFT OF CENTER RADIO WAVES.

WE AGREED TO CHOOSE 5 SONGS WE CURRENTLY CAN'T BE WITHOUT (REALLY, LIKE WE'D DIE...INSIDE), AND BRIEFLY EXPAND ON WHY WE LUV THE SONGS SO MUCH. SO, HERE HERE, TEN SONGS WE ---CURRENTLY---CAN NOT LIVE WITHOUT!

SONGS CHOSEN BY EL CAPITAN:

1. BABY BLUES by KING KRULE

Zoo Kid, Edgar The Beatmaker, King Krule, Archy Marshall is an enigma.

2. HANGING ON TO LIFE by Ariel Pink
The best soft rock song employing bestiality as a metaphor you’ll here all summer.

3. SITTIN' ON THE DOCK (COVER) by UMO
Unknown Mortal Orchestra is by far my favorite band at the moment. I almost picked five UMO songs for this mix but I settled on one, the cover they did of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”. UMO add their signature psychedelic vibes to make this song uniquely their own. The bass is so fucking good and the whistling is top notch.

4. WHITE OATH by SMITH WESTERNS

“White Oath” embodies the Smith Westerns progression as songwriters, a standout track on a stellar album, and the perfect ballad for the culmination of summer. My favorite part is the refrain when Cullen Omori’s voice bleeds effortlessly into the guitar melody while he sings “I’m trying to catch my breath”. It’s catchy as fuck.

5. BABY ARMS by Kurt Vile
I had the pleasure of seeing Kurt Vile perform about a month ago at Audie’s Olympic in Fresno. It was a fantastic show. He played all his hits and then some, all except “Baby’s Arms”.  I left the tavern with an insatiable urge to listen to this song, a compulsion that continues to this day. It’s a simple song that seems to drift on for days with KV’s  looping guitar and ethereal voice.  There is something so melancholic and tender when KV croons “I get sick of just about everyone and I hide in my baby’s arms”. It’s fucking beautiful.

SONGS CHOSEN BY DIENTES FEOS:

6. BRIGHT by ISIS

"My Day Is Brighter Whenever You're Around." The simplicity and direct punch of this tune is so key to that youthful, lustful, hurtful love. It feels so stringed to that notion that it hurts. Did I mention it's my friend's tune? Yes. Yes it is. <3 Isis.

7. HEADLIGHTS by CAT POWER

I wen't through a Cat Power binge about two moths ago, one album really; Dear Sir. Dear Sir is the sound of getting fucked-over too many times and not giving a fuck. "Last Thing I Remember...Hey The Headlights Are Cutting Me".

8. OUT GETTING RIBS by KING KRULE

MAN CRUSH <3 I've only recently discovered KK, confession that veils me in shame. 18 years old, sanguine hair, slit-sharp style, and of course, yeah the voice of satan. This song, specifically, has a small guitar ornamentation peppered that makes my knees buckle.

9. DOG DOOR by TOM WAITS

If this song had a scent, it'd hit notes of urine, dust, cigarettes and lavender. Fur.

10. KROKODIL by ST. VINCENT

This little gem released as a Single EP, and is as sharp sonically as the title is visually. It rocks alone because it is so substantially different from her common antics, and can't really call any of her albums home. I dare you to listen to this track and not wan't to punch a wall.
St. Vincent has punked my life. Punked.
